This is another classic from the annals of Countdown. One of the highest
ever aggregate scores in a 9-round match (145 points!), it followed a 51-51
dead heat from the previous day. Robert Richland (who you may recently have seen on
'Who Wants To Be A Millionaire') had already got 2 wins under his belt, but
was to find Stuart somewhat harder to beat. Having eventually disposed of him,
he went on to win one more game, and narrowly lost in the semi-finals to series
champion Brian Hudson. The particularly high score was obviously helped by the
9-letter word in round 1 and both contestants solving both numbers games correctly.
Richard very kindly allowed Stuart to have the (Shorter Oxford) dictionaries that were
the winners' prize at the time.
